Dr. Michael Sutherland is a physician and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at UAMS Medical Center and is currently the Chief of Acute Care Surgery. He has interests in the management of acute care surgical problems, Trauma and General Surgery.
Dr. Sutherland received his bachelor’s degree at the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and his medical degree from the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. He trained in the Air Force at Keesler Air Force Medical Center in Biloxi, MS and served ten years on active duty with the Air Force. His residency in General Surgery was at Keesler Air Force Medical Center where he stayed for an additional post-graduate fellowship in General Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. During his time in the Air Force, he deployed to Iraq in support of combat operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Dr. Sutherland is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He serves on many state and national committees including his current role as the Chair of the Young Fellows Association of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Arkansas Medical Society, the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, American College of Chest Physicians, the Society for Vascular Surgery, and the Society of American Gastroenterological Endoscopic Surgeons.
