Charles W. Smith, M.D is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine over 35 years of experience in practice.
He served as the Executive Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) from 1989 until 2014 when he became the Director of the Primary Care Service Line at UAMS. He is a Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine.
He has served as a national leader in Family Medicine, as Deputy Editor of the American Family Physician, a national journal for family physicians, and has also served as President of the American Board of Family Medicine, which is the national certifying body for family physicians.
He is author of numerous medical journal articles and is co-author of a medical textbook, The Handbook of Family Practice. He is currently Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Participatory Medicine, an online peer-reviewed journal. He continues to conduct an active practice and also teaches students and residents. He founded and serves as a physician in the UAMS Diagnostic Clinic.
Dr. Smith completed medical school and residency training at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. He came to Little Rock in 1989 to assume his current position at UAMS.
